About SOMIRA...

Straits of Mare Island Rowing Association (SOMIRA) is a community oriented, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Maritime History in the Vallejo area, and participating in whaleboat events, including racing events.

We own one fiberglass whaleboat (Monomoy style) named Lalla Rookh.  We also own two wooden whaleboats named Faith and Buckingham, donated to us by California Maritime Academy,  We have use of a 2nd fiberglass whaleboat Bridgetine which is owned by Gregg.

We participate in many community events, including the annual Vallejo Whaleboat Regatta the first weekend in October.

We have an annual charity row from Sacramento to Brannan Island.  We solicit sponsors for this event and afterwards, we distribute the money raised to local non-profit groups.

We have an annual SOMIRA fundraising crab feed which helps us raise funds for our expenses.

We have an annual Turkey Drive to help supply food for those in need.

We help other organizations in their events:

  • Mare Island to Medusa footrace fundraiser – we help staff this event which raises tens of thousands of dollars for youth oriented community organizations
  • Seafood Extravaganza - we help serve food at this community fundraiser sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the Vallejo Firefighters
  • Loma Vista Farm fundraiser - we provide rowers to help food setup for this event
  • We participate in other fundraising efforts as well as community parades and fairs.
