NOVEMBER MEETING MINUTES By Vicki Brown

The meeting of November 5, 2003 was called to order at 6:30 by President Leslie Redmayne-Titley.

            Melissa gave the Treasurer’s report.

Disbursal of the Delta Row Funds is being effected.  Faith has already presented the Mare Island Historical Society with $645.50 on Monday. Tuesday 11/11 the Humane Society will be presented with $1291.00; 11/12 The Contra Costa/Solano Food Bank ($1291.00) and the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum ($645.50) will receive their donations and on 11/18 our final donation will go to Loma Vista Farm ($1291.00).

It was suggested that we contribute again to the annual community Christmas Card sponsored by the Times Herald.  The moneys this year would be divided between the Salvation Army and the Christian Help Center. It was moved and seconded that the organization donate $150.00 this year.

Adam reported good news and bad news regarding the new cover for the Lalla Rookh. He has talked to the woman who makes the covers and the cost is less than anticipated. The new cover will cost $966.00 plus tax.  The bad news is that she cannot get to it for about 4 weeks and it will take 4 weeks to complete it.  The old cover is in Bob’s garage right now and Leslie R-T said she will take the cover down to her on Monday on the off chance that she might be able to get to it sooner than the projected 4 weeks.  Once she starts work on it and gets the pattern made, etc, she will need the actual boat brought down to her for a “fitting”.

Mare Island to Medusa is this weekend.  Those volunteering should park either at the Boat Works or in the dirt parking lot across from the Boat Works and meet up on the causeway just before the bridge by 645 a.m.  (Parking is also available just outside of the old main gates.)  Faith said that we will need plastic water pitchers.  Adam can’t be “Dorothy” as he has to work.  Gregg was contacted and said he would wear the outfit.  Since rain is predicted, people should keep it simple.

The crab feed was discussed.  We will have it on January 31. It was decided that Teeters was probably not appropriate; Melissa said that the set up of the kitchen was not good and Teeters would only hold 140.  The Naval Museum holds 140 and would cost $500. The Florence Douglas Senior Center is $270 and holds 240. We would need an event license ($25) and a liquor license ($45) Faith will talk to Dan Donahue about event insurance. Melissa will coordinate the kitchen; Nancy said she would do the raffle. Monica needs to be contacted about making up tickets again this year. There will be a meeting of the crab feed committee on Thursday November 13 at 6:00 at Melissa’s. This will be the actual organizing committee, not those folks who just want to work on the event. It was voted that the committee was authorized to make whatever decisions necessary to get the crab feed moving. Make arrangements with Nancy to drop off donations of raffle prizes.

The fun row to the Dead Fish Company will be shelved for another month. The 8th wouldn’t work because of the Bridge opening; there are big tides on the 15th.  Adam will check on December tides.  Patty mentioned putting together a fun row dropping the boat in Petaluma.

Coxswain’s insurance is due in November. It was voted that one of our new coxswains would be Rich Denno. We decided to leave the decision between Jim and Maura as the second coxswain to the coed team since both of them are members of that team. Vicki B will send a letter to Jim and Maura outlining the offer.

Adam said we really need more trained coxswains (so that our rowing coxswains get a chance to row once in awhile) and suggested that people who wanted to learn give it a try on the Moonlight rowing nights. We are consistently having enough people for Moonlight rowing for 2 boats.

We still don’t have a boat maintenance/repair schedule. However, Faith said that CMA said we could use the boat house there on Christmas Break to repair the Lalla Roohk. Melissa has a friend she is hoping will assess the boat and give us an evaluation of what repairs we need at that time.  We do need the Buckingham worked on and it was moved and seconded that we contact Rich Cunningham and have the Buckingham pulled now and have the bottom work done now.  That will cost $500.00.

This weekend is the opening of the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge. For security reasons, we will not be able to use CMA as a staging area; we will have to row to the event. We auctioned off two seats for $65.00 so we need to have at least one boat to take those folks to the fireworks.  We have almost enough rowers for 2 boats.  Mo has the lights.  Those rowing should be at Dock “C” at 4:30 on Saturday November 8.  Fireworks are at 6:00.  The tides should be cooperative; there is an outgoing tide which changes at around 7:00 to an incoming tide.

Paying off the Roohk came up again.  There was much discussion about the goal of paying off the boat and getting the organization out of debt.  After our December payment, we will owe $4521 on the boat. It was moved, seconded  and voted on with a show of hands that the profits from this years crab feed be earmarked to pay down our loan. Paying off the rest of the balance will be revisited at a later date.

Adam brought up having a race day on the last Sunday of each month instead of regular team practice.  Teams would be mixed from each of the teams and any open rowers interested.  The format would be a different race each month ... sprints, long rows, etc.  The first race day will be November 30 at 8:00 a m. This is an ideal opportunity to keep the racing edge and to also row with other club members.

The annual Turkey Row was discussed. No details were forthcoming until we know whether or not we have coxswains.

We will be donating turkeys again this year to the Christian Help Center. Bring your turkey the Sunday row before Thanksgiving.

Leslie R-T said that the winning team from the Chevy Masters got a $100 gift certificate from Chevy’s and proposed using it and additional moneys to have a Holiday get-together at Chevy’s.  Another alternative for the certificate would be to donate it as a raffle prize at the Crab Feed. The bottle of Tequila the 2nd team won will be going into the raffle prizes.

BAWRA calendars are $10 each and we have about 50 of them to sell. Contact Faith or Kathy if you want a calendar for yourself or to sell.

Faith says we will be getting an award from CMA for fixing their boat (for the regatta) on Friday sometime between 9-12.

It was suggested that the minutes in the newsletter delete the balance information from the Treasurer’s report.  The newsletter goes to people who are not Association members. Although as a non-profit organization our finances are an open book, it was felt that those minutes included in the newsletter shouldn’t contain our financial business.

Nancy suggested that we have a goal meeting for our next year. She suggested that one of our goals could be to have all members CPR certified. It was agreed that a goal meeting was probably a good idea.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday December 4 at 6:30 at the Chamber of Commerce

            The meeting closed at 810.

                                                                        Respectfully submitted,

                                                                        Vicki J Brown
