Straits of Mare Island Rowing Association
We are a vibrant community dedicated to preserving the long-standing tradition of whaleboat rowing in the Bay Area. Our club is open to everyone, whether you’re a seasoned rower or new to the sport. Join us on the water to experience camaraderie, tradition, and the thrill of rowing in one of the most beautiful bays in the world. No experience is necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and a love for the water!

2026 SOMIRA Charity Row
Every year SOMIRA members participate in a charity row to raise funds for local charities. This year we will row from Martinez to Vallejo, approximately 11 nautical miles!
In past years this trip has taken between 3 and 5 hours. It will be divided into 3 sections, Martinez to Benicia, Benicia to Glen Cove, and Glen Cove to Vallejo. Rowers can choose between sections, or to row the whole way.
Each Rower will purchase a t-shirt specially designed for the event. Each year’s shirt is a badge of honor and a work of art. This years shirt was designed by our own Member at Large, Tara Funk and is sure to be a popular one (see image below)!
The backs of the shirts are filled with logos. Each logo (approximately 2 inch square) is the result of a donation of $150 (or more!) from a business, club, team, or individual.
All proceeds from the t-shirt sales are added to the donations received and the money is split between the two charities selected as this year’s recipients (voted on by club members).
